Welcome to the web site of the Cratis D. Williams Graduate School at Appalachian State University.
The Cratis D. Williams Graduate School, named for a pioneer in Appalachian Studies and Dean of the Graduate School from 1958 to 1975, was established in early 1948 with an enrollment of 273 students, although graduate courses had been offered at Appalachian since 1942 under the auspices of the University of North Carolina. In the years since Harold Quincy completed the first master's thesis at Appalachian in 1948, the Graduate School has grown to over 1800 master's, specialist, and doctoral students. In the 1980's, research support and encouragement were added to the Graduate School's portfolio of responsibilities.
The Graduate School has two distinct but complementary offices:
- Graduate Studies - administers over 40 graduate degree programs and 12 graduate certificate programs
- Research and Sponsored Programs - oversees activities related to research and program funding
