The History Department's graduate program offers students advanced work in preparation for employment in community, junior and technical colleges (M.A. History/Community College Teaching); museums, archives, and other public venues (M.A. Public History); secondary schools (M.A. History/secondary Education); and business, government or further education (M.A. History).

Program Highlights

  • The program requires that you finish either 30 credit hours with a thesis; 36 credit hours without a thesis.
  • You are given the flexibility to concentrate in particular geographical areas and times with a general approach to historical study.
  • Most assistantships available are in a support role to faculty; although there are some teaching duties available to eligible students.

Application Essentials

Concentration for history education track: Secondary School Teaching

Location of instruction: History and Public History: on campus; History Education: off campus only. Specific locations of off-campus cohorts can be obtained from the Office of Extension and Distance Education

Required Entrance Exam: GRE (score must be no more than 5 years old)

Required Number of References to specify in the on-line form: 3

Supplemental Information: Resume (Required upload for application submission); cover letter addressing reasons why applicant wishes to enter the program and a writing sample (e.g., a research paper) (upload in one document on the Additional Information page in the on-line application); for history education program: proof of teacher licensure

Deadlines for Application. A program not open for a particular term will be marked with an "x." If the program has early screening dates, those dates are listed in parentheses. Applications that are not complete by the early screening date risk denial of admission due to no seats available. Increased enrollment may lead to a term being closed for new applications.

  • Spring: 11/1 (no admission for history education)
  • Summer Session 1: 4/1
  • Summer Session 2: 5/1 (4/1) (no admission for Public History)
  • Fall: History, Public History, History, Education (off campus only): 4/14 (3/15)

Minimum Criteria for Unconditional Admission*: (UGPA x 100) + GREV + GREQ + (GREW x 100) = 1550

*Meeting this condition guarantees consideration of admission. In exceptional circumstances and with special permission from the Graduate School a limited number of students who do not meet this minimum may be granted admission.
