The Library Science Program at Appalachian State University offers a Master's of Library Science (MLS) degree in School and Public Libraries.  We are proud to be a major educator of school media coordinators and public librarians for North Carolina and are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and by the North Carolina Public Library Commission.

Program Highlights

  • School Library Track leads to the 076 North Carolina Media Coordinator licensure for K-12 school librarians. Those with a previous "A" level teacher certification follow a 39 hour master's program. Students who have never been certified as a teacher can pursue the 51 hour master's program to earn the degree and "M" level licensure. Students who have previously earned a Master's degree in another educational field may be able to complete a 30-36 hour school media licensure track.
  • Public Library Track is a 39 hour master's program that leads to the North Carolina public librarian certification. Most graduates of this program are employed by small/medium-sized public libraries in North Carolina.
  • Students may also pursue both School Media licensure and Public Library certification simultaneously (Dual Track).
