Wachovia Award

The Wachovia Environmental Research Award is designed to recognize faculty or graduate students actively engaged in high-quality environmental research related to the southern Appalachians.

Application Information

  • The recipient will be selected in February and will be honored at the Graduate School awards reception in the Spring.
  • The monetary award of $800 (if sufficient funding is generated by the endowment) will be administered in the Graduate School as an expense account.
  • The funding may be used for any non-salary expense related to performing environmental research, including purchase of equipment and supplies, and travel for data collection or dissemination.
  • The recipient must spend the funds by May 15 in the year awarded.

Eligibility

  • Faculty members or graduate students must have completed or made significant progress on a research project producing knowledge of the natural environment and/or human interaction with the natural environment.
  • Such knowledge generally should be grounded in the disciplines eligible for consideration for National Science Foundation research awards.

Application Process

The application must include a letter from the nominator. Two additional (optional) letters may be included from the department chair  and/or faculty colleagues who are familiar with the current or proposed project and who can also speak to the environmental impact of the research.

The application must:

  1. Describe the project for which the funds will be used, including the impact of the project and plans for dissemination of results
  2. Succinctly list the research / creative accomplishments from the last five years

Selection Criteria

  • Significant contributions to environmental research with particular application to the Southern Appalachian Region.
  • Environmental research is defined as research that produces knowledge of the natural environment and/or human interaction with the natural environment. Such knowledge generally should be grounded in the disciplines eligible for consideration for National Science Foundation research awards.
