The Graduate School at Appalachian supports and maintains excellence in graduate education and research and sponsored programs. Through the graduate studies staff and the Graduate Council, the Graduate School supports the institutional mission and the goals for graduate education by assuming responsibility for selected administrative tasks related to graduate study. A Quick Look at Appalachian's Graduate Programs

  • Appalachian has 45 distinct graduate programs at the master's, specialist, and doctoral levels, with as many concentrations.
  • Appalachian has over 2000 degree-seeking graduate students.
  • There are nearly 1000 graduate students in off-campus cohorts at 10 locations in Western North Carolina
  • The Appalachian Studies program graduate program is the only one of its kind in the world.
  • Appalachian's M.S. in Applied Physics is one of the top 22 professional master's-level Physics programs in the United States.
  • The master's degree program in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management (Psychology/Management) has been ranked 20th among the top 40 I/O Psych programs at master's and doctoral institutions in terms of student research productivity. Only four master's programs were named to the Top 40.
  • Approximately 40% of the Fellows in the North Carolina Governor's Public Management Fellowship Program have been graduates of Appalachian Master of Public Administration program.
  • The American College of Sports Medicine has endorsed the curriculum for Appalachian's M.S. in Exercise Science. Appalachian's Exercise Science program is one of the first 25 programs in the United States to be endorsed by the ACSM.
  • The graduate program in Accounting is nationally ranked in first-time pass rate on the CPA examination.
