  • Appalachian's M.S. in Engineering Physics ranked as one of the top 13 professional master's-level Physics programs in the United States.
  • The graduate program in Accounting ranked 1st nationally in graduate performance on the CPA exams.
  • Graduate students in Biology have won research awards and grants from The Explorers Club, the Wilderness Society, the Carolina Bird Club, and the North Carolina Garden Club.
  • Appalachian's graduate students in Psychology have won the Graduate Student Research Competition sponsored by the Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA) 7 times in 20 years.

Graduate students from Appalachian have won:

  • The Conference of Southern Graduate Schools Outstanding Thesis Award (3 times),
  • The Outstanding Graduate Research Award of the Southeastern Psychological Association (7 times),
  • The essay contest sponsored by the Jane Austen Society of North America, and
  • The Outstanding Graduate Student Award given by the American College Personnel
  •  Association.
  • Appalachian's graduate students have presented their research at professional meetings all over the United States, as well as in China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Mexico, and Sweden. As well, graduate students have published their research in refereed journals, often as single authors, or as first or second authors.
  • Graduate students at Appalachian are represented on a number of key University committees and task forces, including the following: Strategic Planning Commission; Academic Policies and Procedures; Graduate Council; University Research Council; Summer School Council; University Bookstore Advisory Board; and Athletic Council.

During the academic year 2006-2007:

  • Over 500 graduate students held graduate assistantships on campus.
  • Over 50 were awarded merit scholarships or fellowships, and
  • Over 80 received tuition awards.
