The Walker College of Business, through collaboration among the academic departments of the College, offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree (305A/52.0201).

The mission of the MBA is to provide educational experiences to prepare our students for life-long learning and professional leadership responsibilities in a dynamic global environment. The program provides individualized attention through extensive student-faculty collaboration. Students in the MBA program are expected to develop a core set of competencies including functional business knowledge, leadership and teamwork skills, analytical and critical thinking skills, responsiveness to domestic and global business environments, appreciation for diversity and multiculturalism as well as ethical and legal responsibilities, professional development and communication skills.

The MBA is offered in a compressed time frame allowing the student to complete the program in one year from their start date by going full time year round and taking summer classes and/or internships.

Starting in the fall of 2010, the MBA program plans to offer concentrations in Sustainable Business, International Business and General Management. Please contact the program director for more details.

The MBA program is open to all undergraduate majors from all colleges who have completed the necessary business prerequisites to take masters level business classes. The prerequisites essentially amount to a business minor plus a core statistics class. The required courses are statistics, financial accounting, economics, corporate finance, marketing and organizational behavior. The college is in the process of developing intense one-hour learning modules for each of these topics which may fulfill the prerequisite requirements with approval of the program director.

The MBA program is also ideal for dual masters programs. In general, a graduate student can earn two masters degrees simultaneously by double counting up to 50% of the credit hours in the smaller program, with approval from both program directors and the graduate school. This reduces the time it takes to complete the second degree. Students have jointly enrolled in the MBA program with the departments of Higher Education and Appropriate Technology. More programs are possible, allowing someone to get both business and technical training.

Computer Requirements: Students are strongly encouraged to have a laptop computer or netbook. Access to the wireless network is provided on campus and utilized in the Walker College of Business.

Enrollment in MBA courses: A student must have permission from the MBA program director to enroll.

Location of Program: This program is offered on campus in Boone in the format described in this Bulletin. Off-campus courses follow a part-time extended program format with rolling admission allowing someone to complete the program two years from their start date. For information about the off-campus program, please contact the Office of Extension and Distance Education: http://www.ext-dl.appstate.edu.
