The Higher Education Graduate Program was founded in 1968 in response to the growing need for community college and university instructors and administrators in North Carolina postsecondary institutions.  Although the program continues its original role, it now serves a national and international population of students and professionals concerned with postsecondary education.

Program Highlights

  • The four concentrations within the program are:
    • Administration: The program integrates theory and practice to enable graduates to deal with the diverse and complex demands of leadership in today's rapidly changing educational environments.
    • Adult Education: The program includes a focus on adult learning activities taking place in a variety of settings from community agencies to business and industry.
    • Developmental Education: The purpose of this program is to prepare persons for teaching or administrative positions serving under prepared remedial/developmental students in colleges and universities.
    • Teaching: The purpose of this program is to prepare persons for teaching positions in community colleges and universities.
  • You are required to take 30 credit hours to complete the Education Specialist program; 36 credit hours to complete the Master's in Higher Education program.

Location of instruction: On and off campus. Specific locations of off-campus cohorts can be obtained from the Office of Extension and Distance Education

Required Entrance Exam: GRE or MAT (score must be no more than 5 years old)

Deadlines for Application. A program not open for a particular term will be marked with an "x." If the program has early screening dates, those dates are listed in parentheses. Applications that are not complete by the early screening date risk denial of admission due to no seats available. Increased enrollment may lead to a term being closed for new applications.

Basic Criteria for Consideration: UGPA in last 60 hours 3.0 and official GRE or MAT scores; OR UGPA in last 60 hours > 2.70 and GREV + GREQ = 800 or MAT score of 385
