Program Overview

Program Director: Dr. Robert Hill; hillrw@appstate.edu; 828-262-2723; Psychology

http://www.psych.appstate.edu/gradprograms.html

The Master of Arts program in Clinical Health Psychology is a terminal master's program that either provides students with the skills necessary to become master's level clinical practitioners, or prepares them for advanced- doctoral level work in Clinical or Health Psychology.  Students in the Clinical Health Psychology program are trained according to the Scientist-Practitioner Model, with dual emphases on research and clinical knowledge designed to provide a solid clinical foundation. Students are encouraged to participate in additional research projects (other than thesis) so that they may be prepared for the rigorous research orientation of most Ph.D. programs in Clinical Psychology.

Program Highlights

  • Most first year students are offered a 10-hour graduate assistantship and a few 15-hour assistantships are also available.
  • Many Clinical Health graduate students teach General Psychology in their second year because they enjoy the experience of independently teaching a course as well as the assistantship support.
  • The opportunity for you to participate directly in active research programs allows them to become coauthors on scientific publications and presentations with faculty members.
  • Most of our graduates work in community mental health centers, hospitals, or practice agencies.
