Scholarships and Fellowships

A number of scholarships and fellowships are available to qualified graduate students. Some scholarships are awarded by the Graduate School to students who have been selected by the Graduate School's Scholarships Committee; other awards are made by individual programs and departments. Below is a partial list of available scholarships and fellowships.

Graduate School Fellowships for Full-Time Students

Chancellor's Fellowships, $5000 (Application Deadline February 1)

The Graduate School seeks applications from new graduate students each academic year. Applicants to graduate school for Summer or Fall may apply by checking "yes" to the scholarship consideration on the admission application. Note: Applicants will include with their admission materials a 500 word essay on the importance of graduate education to their career goals. There is no additional application to complete.

Chancellor's Fellows should meet the following criteria :

  • Unconditional admission to a graduate degree program at Appalachian for Summer or Fall.
  • Full-time status intended (minimum enrollment in 9 graduate credit hours).
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.7 for each college degree earned.
  • 70th percentile or higher on each section of the required entrance exam (GRE, MAT, GMAT) using scores that are no more than 5 years old.

Chancellor's Fellows who demonstrate excellence their first year by maintaining a 3.7 GPA will automatically receive a second year of funding. The top finalist for the Chancellor's Fellowship will receive the Lovill Fellowship, a $10,000 award for the first year and a $7500 award for the second year.

Provost's Fellowships, $3000 (Application Deadline March 31)

Five to seven Provost's Fellowships are awarded each Fall to outstanding new or continuing graduate students. Applicants will complete a 500 word essay on the importance of graduate education to their career goals.

  • New summer or fall students may apply by checking "yes" to the scholarship consideration question on the admission application, and then uploading the essay as an attachment.
  • Continuing students should use the paper application form and attach the essay and a resumé.

To be considered for the Provost's Fellowship, a student should have:

  • Unconditional admission to a graduate degree program at Appalachian.
  • Full-time status (minimum enrollment in 9 graduate credit hours per semester).
  • New students: A GPA in all college degrees of at least 3.5.
  • Returning students: A 3.7 GPA.
  • Standardized test scores at or above the 60th percentile.

The Provost's Fellowship is not automatically renewable, but a recipient may reapply and compete for a second award.

Alumni Fellowships, $1750 (Application Deadline March 31)

Between ten and fifteen Alumni Scholarships are awarded each year to excellent new or continuing graduate students. Applicants will include a 500 word essay on the importance of graduate education to their career goals.

  • New summer or fall students may apply by checking "yes" to the scholarship consideration on the admission application, and then uploading the essay as an attachment.
  • Continuing students should use the paper application form and attach the essay and resumé.

To be considered for the Alumni Fellowship, a student should have:

  • Unconditional admission to a graduate degree program at Appalachian.
  • Full-time status (minimum enrollment in 9 graduate credit hours per semester).
  • New students: A GPA in all college degrees of at least 3.3.
  • Returning students: A 3.5 GPA.
  • Standardized test scores at or above the 50th percentile.

The Alumni Fellowship is not automatically renewable, but a recipient may reapply and compete for a second award.

Diversity Fellowships, $1500-2000 (Application Deadline July 1)

Three or four Diversity Fellows are chosen each year. Diversity Fellows receive $1500-2000 for the academic year. Reapplication at the end of an appointment is encouraged. A graduate student may be a Diversity Fellow for up to two years. The team of Diversity Fellows will be selected to work with the Graduate School to plan and implement a project designed to increase diversity and inclusiveness in graduate education at Appalachian.

Applicants must meet the following criteria :

  • Unconditional admission to a graduate degree program at Appalachian.
  • New students: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 in all degrees.
  • Continuing students: Graduate GPA of at least 3.7.
  • Full-time status (minimum enrollment in 9 graduate credit hours per semester).
  • Life experience that positions the applicant to bring diversity to applicant's degree program and provides the applicant with a unique perspective on the value of diversity and inclusiveness in graduate programs.

The application must include the following (for both new and returning graduate students):

  • A letter of application summarizing how the applicant meets the criterla (there is no form to complete).
  • An essay describing how the applicant can contribute toward creating a climate of diversity and inclusiveness, not only in the applicant’s graduate program but also to Appalachian’s graduate programs as a whole.
  • A letter of support from the applicant’s graduate program director, graduate mentor, or department chair.
  • A current resumé or curriculum vitae.

Diversity Fellows will be announced shortly after classes begin in August.

North Carolina Campus Scholarships, $300-$500

Five to ten scholarships are available to fulltime students with high financial need who are North Carolina residents. There is no formal application process. Recipients will be chosen from all full-time (9 hours per semester) graduate students who have completed the FAFSA (Federal Finacial Aid Form) and demonstrated high financial need. Awards are not renewable.
