EDUCATION FOR INDIVIDUALS USING
NON-HUMAN VERTEBRATE ANIMALS

All faculty and staff using non-human vertebrate animals for research or teaching must complete the education program. All students working with non-human vertebrate animals as part of a research project or in instruction beyond lab exercises (i.e. playing a role as a research assistant or student researcher or supervising laboratory/classroom demonstrations) must complete the education program. The program consists of reading the Appalachian State University Animal User's Guide, asking questions of the Animal Care Training Officer or already certified researchers, and completing the Certification Examination. The examination can be requested from the Training Officer and should be returned upon completion.

NOTE: Although students working with animals (as described above) must complete the education program, students may not conduct research or instruction with animals as the primary investigator. All animal use protocols must be signed and submitted by a faculty researcher/instructor.

The Animal Care Training Officer can be contacted as follows:
Dr. Mark Zrull
