Awards for Graduate Students

The Graduate School administers the following awards for research, creative activities, and professional development.

Fall Awards: Research / Creative Activities and Professional Development

  • Joyce V. Lawrence Award: Established to honor outstanding graduate students and fund professional development activities. Nomination Deadline: On or before October 15 each year.
  • Domer Research Award: This award was established to provide assistance for thesis research/scholarly activities expenses or for travel expenses incurred by graduate students who wish to attend a conference to present their research. Nomination Deadline: On or before October 15 each year.
  • Zigli Research Award: Established to support graduate students engaged in research/scholarly activities such as travel related to study and/or purchase of supplies or research materials. Nomination Deadline: On or before October 15 each year.
  • GSAS Research and Travel Grants and Cratis Williams Research Grants: Multiple submission dates are set each year. See the Office of Student Research for more information on eligibility and submission.

Spring Awards: Teaching, Research / Creative Activities and Service

  • Outstanding Thesis Awards: To recognize outstanding research or creative activity by students who have completed master's theses in the previous calendar year. Awards are made in the following categories: Social Science / Education; Arts / Humanities; Science / Technology. Nomination Deadline: On or before February 1 each year.
  • Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award: To recognize graduate student GTA's who excel as instructors in undergraduate classes during the current academic year. Up to three awards are made each year. Nomination Deadline: On or before March 1 each year.
  • Outstanding Graduate Student Service Award: To Recognize graduate students who have contributed to graduate student life in their departments, off-campus cohorts, or on campus during the current academic year. Nomination Deadline: On or before March 1 each year.
  • Transforming North Carolina Research Award: To recognize and award faculty and/or graduate students for research that contributes to the welfare of the citizens of North Carolina. Nomination Deadline: On or before March 1 each year.
  • GSAS Research and Travel Grants and Cratis Williams Research Grants: Multiple submission dates are set each year. See the Office of Student Research for more information on eligibility and submission.

Awards Open to Both Faculty and Students

  • Wachovia Award: To recognize and award faculty and/or graduate students for research related to environmental concerns for the region served by the University. Nomination Deadline: On or before May 1 each year.
